A foodie’s guide to: West Sussex

Exploring somewhere new is a wonderfully sensory experience. Each day marks a fresh opportunity to touch and smell, to fill our eyes and ears with the things around us. But in this rich mix, taste is equally evocative. Years later, we still remember the lobster we ate at a little seafood café, or the ice cream that cooled a gorgeously hot day.

A food-lover’s getaway

Great food is a powerful thing, so we count ourselves lucky that some of the best restaurants in West Sussex are right here on our doorstep. Ranging from artsy nooks to Michelin-standard experiences, there’s plenty to excite even the most discerning of diners.

There’s also hospitality on a smaller scale, from cosy cafés and bakeries to laid-back farmyard tea rooms. And of course, at the heart of it all sit the all-important local growers, makers, butchers and suppliers; the independent farm shops, delis, markets, and fishermen. West Sussex is a food-lover’s dream destination.

The best restaurants

For a special meal or celebration, West Sussex reaches the peak of refined dining. At The Crab and Lobster in Sidlesham, fresh seafood is celebrated in elegant surroundings – imagine baked Selsey crab or pan-roasted prawns with seasonal sides. In Kirdford, The Half Moon is part country pub, part fusion restaurant: a vibrant blend that’s earned it 2AA Rosettes and many more awards besides.

In Arundel, The Parsons Table offers an informal atmosphere complemented by beautiful dishes that highlight local ingredients. And for those seeking Michelin-starred excellence, The Pass in Horsham delivers an intimate tasting menu experience, spearheaded by renowned chef Ben Wilkinson. Showcasing modern British cookery at its best, dining here is never just about food – it’s a celebration of craft.

Light bites and coffee breaks

Eating well needn’t always be a formal experience: West Sussex is peppered with cosy cafés and stylish brunch spots well suited to a morning reset or 3pm pick-me-up. The Hungry Guest café in Petworth serves outstanding coffee alongside sourdough toasties and pastries, while Malt Café in Worthing is a good place to pause for creative brunch options.

Championing all things slow and seasonal, The Barn in Chichester offers breakfast, brunch and lunch, with generous portions and a friendly feel. In the evenings, head over to its sister site in Little London, where the Wine Bar & Kitchen conjures up small and medium plates to share.

Alternatively, you could head out into the countryside, where Wellies Tea Rooms at Oldwick Farm has perfected crowd-pleasing favourites such as piled-high scones and “breakfast banquets” in a tranquil rural setting.

Classic country pubs

Warm and welcoming, the country pub is an English classic – meaning no food-lover’s journey is complete without a visit to one of West Sussex’s atmospheric inns. In Tillington, The Horse Guards Inn instantly sets you at ease with its old oak beams, open fires, and small but seasonal British menu featuring foraged and homegrown ingredients.

The 16th-century Noah’s Ark in Lurgashall similarly pairs cosy interiors with intentionally simple dishes, while the Horse & Groom in East Ashling offers an unfussy menu done exceptionally well: just the thing after a day walking the South Downs.

Something special in Chichester

Chichester’s city centre offers an enviable selection of cafes, restaurants and bars, so you could easily spend both night and day exploring its winding side streets and historic quarters.

The Ivy Chichester is a go-to spot for signature classics like perfectly cooked steaks and seafood, while Brasserie Blanc devises sophisticated French dishes such as steak frites and chateaubriand. Another local favourite is Purchases Restaurant on North Street, where sunny days herald al fresco drinks and dining in the “secret garden”.

Shops, stalls and artisan suppliers

Curious where to find the freshest seafood straight off the shore? At the heart of West Sussex’s food culture are its growers, makers, and suppliers. Far beyond its restaurants, this area has a thriving food culture that embraces everything from pop-ups to vineyards, reflecting the region’s quality produce and independent spirit.

The key lies in knowing exactly where to look. In East Wittering, the Fisherman’s Hut is a real delight for food lovers, offering the chance to buy freshly landed seafood right on the shoreline – the perfect start to a coastal feast.

Cowdray Farm Shop is stocked with local meat, cheeses, and seasonal vegetables, while Charlie’s Farm Shop in Pulborough offers everything from raw milk to artisan preserves. For baked treats, Serendipitous Bakery in Chichester creates impressive sourdough loaves and pastries.
