Visit West Wittering Beach

At the head of any holiday wish-list is a visit to West Wittering Beach. Large areas are dog-friendly all year round, making this a lovely place to stretch your legs, paddle, or sit and watch the world breeze by.

Like many places, West Wittering Beach’s “dog rules” vary by season. From mid-May to mid-September, the area between groynes 14a and 18 (near the beach huts) is kept dog-free, but during the quieter months, the entire beach opens up to become your playground.

Walk to East Head

The East Head circular walk is a joy in every season, creating a natural backdrop that always inspires. If you’re staying in our luxury West Sussex accommodation, the starting point is easy to find – simply head for the car park at West Wittering Beach. From here, you can either stride out on a loop around East Head (around one mile, or 1.6km), or press on to include the Chichester Harbour coastal path and Ellanore Lane.

At a leisurely four miles (approx. 6.4km), this longer walk offers the chance to take in beautiful harbourside views, sand dune habitats, and leafy tree tunnels. The entire route is dog friendly, but some pathways may pass sections that are roped off to protect nesting birds, so do look out for signs as you go.

The best post-walk coffee

We know the greatest walks are rounded off with a restful coffee stop, and in West Wittering, this can happily include pets. The Landing, just a short stroll from the beach, is a popular stop-off point for both locals and visitors, thanks to its laid-back atmosphere and warm welcome. Here, both you and your dog can pause, sit, and browse the options – which include freshly ground coffee, cakes, and smoothies.

And, down on the sands, the dog-friendly Beach Café offers an all-day menu, from breakfast and light lunches to evening drinks. Dogs are welcome inside, but you can also order from a handy takeaway window if you prefer to sit and sip on the beach.

Golden hour walks

West Wittering is a go-to spot, so if you prefer a quieter pace, it’s worth knowing the best time to avoid crowds. For optimum peace and quiet, we recommend early morning and evening walks. Alongside emptier beaches, these golden hours offer a fresh perspective on our local area.

As the day begins, you may be lucky enough to spot rare birds and other wildlife among the sand dunes. And, when you’re prepped with a picnic blanket and hamper (including dog treats, of course), dusk becomes a chance to sit back and marvel at the West Sussex sunset.
