Saltmere Barn

Nr. Newtown, Isle of Wight

From £293 per night

Light, bright and contemporary, this converted barn has plenty of space for active families. Make it your berth for a stay that features outdoor suppers, swimming and tennis, or book as a bolt-on to The Manor House for larger group getaways.

Set near Newtown, within the same estate as The Manor House, Saltmere Barn is a welcoming and dog-friendly family base. Reimagined as a spacious, free-flowing home, it strikes a modern note within this centuries-old landscape.

Here, you can revel in the comforts of a barn conversion, with the benefits of shared estate facilities. An all-weather tennis court, vast landscaped gardens and an outdoor swimming pool (from June to September) are all part of the wider experience.

Saltmere Barn sleeps up to six guests in three bedrooms, including an en-suite king-sized master, and two twin rooms with a family bathroom. The living area is bright and airy, with a generous L-shaped sofa that’s perfect for feet-up film nights. This sense of sociability extends into the open-plan kitchen and dining areas, meaning adults and children can cook, relax, and still share stories about their day.

Subtle coastal styling runs throughout Saltmere Barn, as a nod to its island roots. But, as you step outside, this location is easy to appreciate. Doors lead out to a private garden and patio, where summer suppers and drinks can be taken al fresco. Beyond this, you’ll find the estate’s gardens and shared leisure facilities, including optional boat mooring.

And, when you’re ready to explore, it’s just a short walk to Newtown Quay, where you can canoe, paddleboard, or simply enjoy being by the water. Saltmere Barn welcomes one dog, and with so much on your doorstep (including the 55-acre estate itself), it’s a destination that’s likely to please everyone; your canine included.

As a standalone choice, Saltmere Barn is a peaceful retreat for families or groups of couples. However, it can also become another base for those booking The Manor House; either as extended accommodation or a self-contained space with extra privacy.

Owner recommendations

Where to eat and drink

The Isle of Wight is known for its food, meaning you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. At The Spyglass Inn on Ventnor’s esplanade, you can sit down to dinner at the water’s edge, sampling seafood caught in nearby Ventnor Haven. In Newport, Hewitt’s is a lovely lunch spot, while PO41 (in both Yarmouth and Cowes) pours quality artisan coffee. From April to October, The Hut in Colwell Bay fires up its grill for fresh seafood and meats, served with a sea view.

What to do in the local area

During your stay, venture the short distance to discover the Newtown Nature Reserve. This serene spot is teeming with life, making it one of the best places on the Isle of Wight for birdwatching. If you prefer wild, coastal adventures, head to Freshwater Bay for a spot of coasteering, navigating the island’s nooks and crannies in a new way. And, for laid-back heritage days, we recommend Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle, which both have royal tales to tell.

Concierge

We’re here to help create the best holiday; right from the moment you book. That’s why all our guests have full access to our concierge package, welcome app and local partners.
