Curlews is a stunning, eco-friendly home with enviable views, a concealed lift, and direct access to the beach. This design-led property has an upside-down layout, with bedrooms on the ground floor and a spacious open-plan living area on the first floor, to make the most of the breathtaking sea views.

Large windows frame the water at every opportunity, and draw you to the ocean beyond. Yet, unlike the exterior, which is streamlined and modern, there's a warmth and tranquillity that flows throughout inside, encouraging blissful relaxation.

The sitting room has a peaceful palette of soft blues and neutral tones, which are both calm and inviting. There's a wood burning stove to keep you company on wintery nights, and a television for cuddled-up cosiness.

The library, with its beautifully presented, covetable collection of books, provides the perfect excuse to while away the hours. If you look carefully, you’ll discover a secret bathroom, hidden behind one of the bookshelves, offering possibly the best view of any room in the house.

The kitchen is extremely well equipped with a vast, amply-stocked pantry, and a Lacanche range, which makes cooking a joy. There's also a simple yet elegant dining area with panoramic views.

On the ground floor, discover four sumptuous king-size bedrooms (one of which can be split into two single beds), and three bathrooms. Each room has its own private terrace and views across the sea or garden. There's also an internal lift, and a fully accessible wet room.

The owner, an artist, has a studio tucked away the ground floor, too, and many of her beautiful pieces are exhibited throughout the property.

Equal care has been given to the outside space, where you'll find a variety of places to eat, drink, and relax depending on the time of day and temperature. The Derek Jarmanesque garden provides the perfect spot for sundowners and the comfortable seating area with barbecue will tempt you to dine al fresco, making the most of a balmy summer’s evening.

Curlews' breathtaking sea views, coupled with its sensitively curated design, make this an exquisite setting for a truly unforgettable coastal escape.

Location

Selsey, West Sussex

Selsey is a small seaside town, eight miles south of Chichester on the southernmost point of the Manhood Peninsula. Its name is derived from the Saxon name of 'Seals-ey', or Island of Seals as it was at that time. Best known for its fresh lobster and crab (which is delicious), Selsey has a long history of fishing and still boasts its own fleet. The beach is shingle, but stretches for miles along the coastline as far as East and West Wittering, making it a popular spot in the summer.

Owner recommendations

Where to eat and drink

You really must make the most of the stunning position of the cottage.

My favourite spot for coffee is on the front balcony at Curlews, overlooking the sea.

For an evening drink, we love to watch the sun setting at the Crown & Anchor in Dell Quay.

My recommendation for a local restaurant would be the wonderful Crab & Lobster in Sidlesham, which has an unrivalled, locally sourced, seafood menu.

What to do in the local area

I love to walk to Church Norton, along the shingle beach, past the train carriage cottages, across the Nature Reserve, and around Pagham Harbour to the Saxon Chapel.

If you’re feeling adventurous you must try paddle boarding from the beach, or at least enjoy watching others!
