Fife, Scotland
From £6000 per night
Rooted in the historic kingdom of Fife, Dunlara Castle is one of its most impressive and atmospheric properties. This vast estate spans 1,500 acres, including a Scottish Baronial castle, an ancient wild forest and a private beach. It’s an ideal setting for golfing stays or multi-generational holidays, with plenty of space for everyone.
Family retreats are rarely more special than your own Scottish castle. A landmark in northeast Fife, this remarkable property is inspiring from a distance, but even better when you step inside. Though available on a self-catering basis, it can also be booked as a fully bespoke serviced stay, with a private chef and butler service. Across its 16 rooms, sprawling estate and exceptional facilities, you can live a lifestyle that’s often only dreamed of.
As a historic Scottish seat, Dunlara dates back to the 18th century, with the castle you’ll see today completed in the 1850s. Its ancestral family have been Royal Standard Bearers since the 1200s, with links to William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Despite this pedigree, the castle is undoubtedly a family home: gorgeous and grand, but designed to be lived in.
Here, the mood is just right for cosy gatherings. The luxurious interior is made wonderfully comfortable with roaring open fires, candlelit rooms and characterful touches. An Aga-warmed kitchen is kitted out with everything a modern chef needs, meaning you can settle into shared cooking nights (or simply pass the reins to a professional).
Behind every door, there’s a fresh discovery. A billiards room, cinema, sauna and table tennis are all tucked away here, proving that relaxation and play are built into the fabric of this place. With so much space to call your own, you can host suppers in the dining room, curl up with a book from the library, or retire to the drawing room with board games.
The sleeping quarters are equally splendid, boasting ample room for larger groups. With a dedicated nursery (sleeping six), children can claim their own zone, along with the ultimate childhood luxury: a playroom. For adults, the beautifully furnished bedrooms include double-bed suites with large walk-in showers. Lucky guests in the Tower Room can look forward to one of the best views in the house – its external tower offers a panorama of the whole estate, reaching into the countryside beyond.
In the fine tradition of country estates, Dunlara Castle brings sports and leisure to the fore. There’s a home gym within the castle, while the grounds include a tennis court, croquet lawn, outdoor swimming pool (from May to October), and driving range (for an additional cost). Within a half-hour journey, you can also access some of the world’s best and most prestigious golf courses, including Gleneagles, Carnoustie, and The Old Course at St Andrews. Or, you might choose to set out on foot, wandering the estate’s walled gardens, nature trails and private pebble beach.
Rich in atmosphere but brought right up to date, Dunlara Castle forms a truly unique bolthole. Whether you’re celebrating, exploring as a group, or planning a golfing holiday, this Scottish retreat is a rallying point for your favourite people.

Overlooking the Firth of Tay, Birkhill Castle is just 15 minutes from Dundee and 25 minutes from St Andrews. If you’re flying, Edinburgh Airport is only an hour away, making it easier than you’d expect to escape to this rural idyll.
You’ll often find us heading out to St Andrews, where Bibi’s Café serves delicious brunch options. In the evening, the town comes alive with great drinks venues, including sophisticated cocktail bars and modern lounges. We also love eating at The View and The Shoreline, which are both found in Newport.
There’s a huge amount to do around the castle itself, but if you’re keen to explore a little further, you can pick up the Fife Coastal Path straight from the estate. A stroll around St Andrews is always rewarding, while the nearby village of Falkland offers a historic palace, Outlander filming destinations, and walks up Lomond Hill.
